Ben and Sarah in The Gambia

May has been a month packed with chaos and excitement. We’ve had quite a few visits, Ben has been in his new job for a month now, we’ve got baby chicks to look after and the big RHS shows will soon be upon us.

Ben has had to make an emergency appointment at the hairdressers. The BBC are coming to film him as part of the Hampton Court Flower Show Coverage. They are going to be looking at his new position at Twycross Zoo and his new role there, so look out for us in July.

I know a lot of our customers are eager to know about Ben’s new job at Twycross Zoo. He is enjoying it and has no plans to quit any time soon (which may disappoint some and delight others). The general reaction of customers has not only been shock, but worry that the nursery is going to close or change. To reassure you all the nursery will be open for many years to come. Ben may be away during the week but he’s back at the weekends and still has input into the nursery’s day-to-day running and the plants we grow and sell. It would be hard to stop him telling us what to do!

The chance of seeing him when visiting the nursery has not changed any; he’s home Saturday and Sunday and as anyone who knows Ben is aware, he was always away doing something or other before he started the job. You really won’t see a difference - except things may be a little better organised!

We have had quite a few Garden Clubs and different Societies visiting us over the past month. Ben would normally show the groups around, so Sarah, Jill and Guy had to provide the entertainment. All the groups got a talk and tour of the plants and a look around the animals. I think everyone had a good time. It’s nice for people to see behind the scenes on what we are doing with the site and how things are changing.

Finally, we have some new arrivals to the team. We have quite a few eggs about to hatch and quite a few already have. We’ve got everything from baby Cranes to South American Lapwings to Turkeys to Ducklings. Sarah is in charge of the animals in Ben’s absence and this is probably the worst time of year. The Crane are all in breeding mode and hence each pair has to be separated. Over the winter they can mix with each other fine but as soon as the breeding season starts they want to kill any other crane that comes near. Also we have had a problem with a fox and unfortunately we’ve lost a few of our chickens.

You will see on our Plant List page that we have new availability list. We hope by the end of the year to have descriptions and pictures for each plant - it is on the to do list.

If you are going to BBC Gardeners World Live then please stop by our stand in the floral marquee to say hello. Ben won’t be there for most of the show as he is flying to Rotterdam for a conference but Sarah will be there.
